Shayne was born in Moscow, Russia. His biological mom left him at the hospital only leaving behind a letter stating she had no interest in what happened to him. He was placed in an orphanage where he stayed for nine months.
After a stressful flight home, Shayne arrived at his new home on January 31, 2004. Shayne transferred to a new high school for tenth grade. During the second week of school, students were asked if they would speak in chapel about experiencing Christ-like love. Shayne volunteered to speak about his adoption. The reception Shayne received that day from students and faculty confirmed he was in an environment where he would be encouraged and supported.
